Psychology Today defines adjustment disorder as:
“Adjustment disorder is an abnormal and excessive reaction to an identifiable life stressor. The reaction is more severe than would normally be expected and can result in significant impairment in social, occupational, or academic functioning.”
Adjustment disorder can be seen in both youth and adults. Divorce or martial conflict can result in this diagnosis for the adults, as well as their children. If there is a major life change going on for your child and you are worried about their ability to cope, it is a good idea to seek help. Parents can benefit from seeing a counselor and getting tips on how to help their child process and cope. Counseling can also help children to have a safe place to let out their emotions and receive unbiased guidance.
