It’s January. Between making new resolutions, setting new goals for yourself, or going back to work, this month can quickly become busy and overwhelming.
That’s why it’s important to set some boundaries for yourself, and make sure you’re including self care on your to do lists. Stephanie A Sarkis Ph.D over on Psychology Today wrote a great article with 7 tips for Good Self Care
7 tips for Good Self Care
1. Self-care is about looking out for Number One.
When you take care of yourself, you are better able to take care of others. When you put self care as a priority, you are setting yourself up to shine in all areas of your life.
2. Proactive self-care is better than reactive self-care.
It is easy to wait until something extremely stressful has occurred to schedule some self care. But usually not as effective. Making sure you are scheduling self care as a regular part of your routine is key to your success.
3. Self-care is different for everyone.
Sometimes self care looks like taking a new exercise class. Sometimes it looks like staying in and reading a new book. It looks different to everyone, and you are entitled to figure out what is your favorite activity (or no activity!) to do to keep yourself balanced and loved.
4. Self-care includes seeking therapy.
Self care might look like seeking help from an outside source. A therapist or counselor can help you figure out how to set some boundaries, take better care of yourself, or figure out some things in your past that might be impacting your life right now.
5. Good self-care teaches you about setting boundaries.
Setting boundaries is the foundation of great self care. Whether it is with your time, or people in your life. To be the best and healthiest person, sometimes the best things are to set firm boundaries that might otherwise compromise that.
6. Good self-care can be written down in a list.
A great way to incorporate self care is to make a list. Making a list of all the enjoyable things you love to do for yourself is great to have on hand when you are feeling low. You can take out your list at anytime and go through your list for some wonderful ‘me’ time!
7. Good self-care takes practice.
It’s not always easy to set aside time for yourself. Or to even figure out what self care means to you. We are a society who are always on the go, and usually always on the go for other people. It will take time to get in the practice of putting yourself first. Don’t worry, you’ll get use to it and it’ll become second nature in no time!
