Trauma Informed Counseling in Phoenix, AZ
Reclaiming Your Narrative and Finding Safety Within
At Biltmore Psychology and Counseling, we do not view individuals as “broken” or “damaged.” We believe in the tenacity of the human spirit and the inherent resilience that allows people to survive even the darkest nights. However, we also know that trauma can leave a lasting imprint on the mind and body, making the world feel unsafe and the future feel uncertain.
Trauma-informed counseling at BPC is a specialized, compassionate approach designed to help you process painful experiences while prioritizing your safety, autonomy, and long-term healing. Our psychologists and counselors provide a warm, professional environment where you can move from surviving to thriving.
The Impact of Trauma
Understanding the Impact of Trauma
Trauma is not defined solely by an event, but by how your nervous system responds to it. Whether a single “Big T” event or a series of “little t” stressors, trauma can impact your relationships, your career, and your sense of self. We support individuals navigating various forms of trauma, including:
Acute Trauma: Resulting from a single stressful or dangerous event, such as a car accident or a victimizing incident.
Chronic Trauma: Stemming from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events, such as domestic violence or long-term bullying.
Complex Trauma (C-PTSD): Often originating in childhood, involving exposure to multiple traumatic events of an invasive, interpersonal nature.
Vicarious & Occupational Trauma: Common among first responders and medical professionals who are exposed to the suffering of others.
The BPC Difference: Innovative Healing Modalities
Transformation requires more than just “talking it out.” It requires evidence-based methods that help the brain and body let go of the grip of the past. At BPC, our clinicians are experts in several highly effective trauma-processing modalities:
- Brainspotting: A powerful, focused treatment that works by identifying "spots" in your visual field that correlate with the processing of trauma in the deep brain. It allows for the release of physical and emotional tension that talk therapy alone may not reach.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): A research-backed technique that helps the brain "reprocess" traumatic memories so they no longer trigger intense emotional or physical responses.
- Somatic Experiencing: A body-oriented approach that focuses on releasing pent-up "survival energy" and helping the nervous system return to a state of calm and regulation.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS): A transformative model that helps you identify and heal the different "parts" of your internal world that have been impacted by trauma.

Trauma Informed Counseling FAQ
If you find yourself struggling with intrusive thoughts, hyper-vigilance, emotional numbness, or difficulty trusting others following a stressful life event or trauma, trauma-informed care is often the most effective path forward.
While both are highly effective “bottom-up” therapies, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements) to process memories. In contrast, Brainspotting uses fixed eye positions to access specific subcortical areas where trauma is stored. Your therapist can help determine which is best for you.
Not at all. Our first priority is “resourcing”—ensuring you feel safe and have coping tools in place before we ever dive into the details of your history. You are always in control of the pace of your sessions.
