Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM) Therapy

Deep Healing Anchored in Unwavering Safety

At Biltmore Psychology and Counseling, we recognize that for some, the idea of “processing trauma” feels terrifying. The fear of being overwhelmed by painful memories often prevents people from seeking the help they need. The Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM) was designed specifically to solve this problem.

CRM is a trauma-based treatment model that prioritizes internal safety above all else. By building a “scaffolding” of resources within your nervous system, CRM allows you to step into the most difficult parts of your history without being “re-traumatized” or emotionally flooded. It is a path to healing that can honor your strength and help you feel less alone in your pain.

Is CRM Right For Me?

The Power of Being “Fully Resourced”

What makes CRM unique is its use of multiple, simultaneous “resources” to keep the brain in a state of calm while processing trauma. In a CRM session, your therapist helps you layer several physiological and psychological anchors:

  • Internal Power Focused Breathing: Specific breathing patterns that regulate the vagus nerve and signal safety to the brainstem.
  • Nested Eye Positions: Utilizing specific eye gazes to anchor into resourceful states or access specific neural networks.
  • Internal Resource Imagery: Connecting with “nurturing” or “protective” internal figures to provide the support that may have been missing during the original trauma.
  • Somatic Grounding: Staying deeply connected to the physical sensations of the body to prevent dissociation.
  • Sound & Vibration: Using specific tones or frequencies to help the nervous system stay “online” during the session.

Because of its emphasis on safety and stability, CRM is an excellent choice for individuals who have found other trauma therapies too intense or “destabilizing.” We find it is particularly effective for:

  • Complex Trauma (C-PTSD): Healing layers of long-term developmental or relational trauma.
  • Severe Dissociation: Helping those who “check out” or go numb during therapy to stay present and connected.
  • Generational Trauma: Processing burdens and patterns passed down through family lineages.
  • Attachment Wounds: Repairing the “broken bonds” of early childhood in a way that feels safe and reparative.
  • Extreme Phobias & Panic: Addressing the root of terror from a place of profound internal strength.

What to Expect in a CRM Session

A CRM session at BPC feels highly structured and supportive. Unlike traditional talk therapy, the focus is on your internal experience:

  1. Resource Building: Before any trauma is addressed, you and your therapist will spend time “nesting” resources. You will learn to feel a sense of safety in your body that you can call upon at any time.
  2. Targeting the Wound: Once the scaffolding of safety is in place, you will gently turn toward the traumatic memory or feeling.
  3. Staying Present: Because you are anchored by breathing, eye positions, and internal support, you can observe the “old” pain without being consumed by it.
  4. Releasing & Unburdening: As the brain recognizes it is safe, the traumatic energy is released, leading to a deep sense of relief and integration.

Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM) FAQ

While both use eye positions, EMDR focuses on moving through a memory quickly. CRM focuses on staying with the memory while being so “resourced” that the memory no longer feels threatening. Many clients find CRM provides a deeper sense of core safety than EMDR.

No. While CRM uses internal imagery (like a “protective figure”), the model is grounded in neurobiology. The imagery is a tool to trigger specific neural pathways associated with safety. Your therapist will work with whatever concepts feel most authentic to you.

Yes. In fact, CRM is one of the premier models for treating dissociation. By building a strong “resourced” foundation first, we help the brain stay connected to the present moment rather than “splitting off” when things get difficult.

While trauma work requires energy, most CRM clients report feeling “grounded” and “clear” after a session rather than “shattered.” The model’s goal is to leave you feeling more empowered, not less.
