Scottsdale Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Counseling

PTSD counseling is available to Scottsdale residents at Biltmore Psychology & Counseling. Our licensed psychologists and counselors treat post-traumatic stress using EMDR therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure, Brainspotting and trauma-focused CBT, in person at our office near Biltmore Fashion Park and online anywhere in Arizona. Free 10-minute consultation: (480) 999-7070.

PTSD counseling helps individuals to overcome the physical and emotional effects of traumatic experiences, regardless of the nature of trauma or how long ago the incident occurred. Our psychologists and counselors have extensive experience treating individuals suffering from life-altering symptoms of PTSD using methods including EMDR therapy

While Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD was first discovered among military men that had endured the brutality of war, today we know that many individuals can experience lingering symptoms associated with trauma and painful circumstances. Individuals with PTSD often describe recurrent feelings of anxiety, fear, and hopelessness that they cannot seem to fix.

While the trauma of our past may seem like they will haunt us forever, there is hope. At Biltmore Psychology and Counseling, our PTSD therapists help individuals overcome the symptoms and difficulties of PTSD and guide them through the processes of grief and healing.

Trauma treatment is not one method. What works for a single incident is often not what works for years of accumulated harm, and what suits someone who wants to talk through the memory is not what suits someone who cannot get near it yet.

That is why we carry several approaches rather than one, and why the first thing we do is figure out which one fits you.

PTSD Counseling for Scottsdale Residents

Our office is at 6245 N 24th Parkway near 24th Street and Camelback, next to Biltmore Fashion Park, about 20 minutes west of Old Town Scottsdale on Camelback Road. We see clients from Old Town, Arcadia, McCormick Ranch, Gainey Ranch, Scottsdale Ranch, North Scottsdale, DC Ranch and Grayhawk.

Trauma work asks a lot of people, and one thing that helps is not having to brace for the appointment on top of everything else. If a weekly drive is one demand too many right now, online sessions are available to any Arizona resident, and EMDR in particular is routinely delivered online.

Some Scottsdale clients start online while they are deciding whether therapy is for them and move into the office later, or never do, which is also fine.

Trauma rarely arrives alone. Anxiety and depression often travel with it, and sometimes one of those is the more urgent problem to work on first. We treat both, alongside everything else we offer locally in Scottsdale.

PTSD Counseling FAQ

PTSD therapy is treatment aimed at reducing the hold a traumatic experience has on your present-day life. Post-traumatic stress is not a memory problem, it is a nervous system that has not registered that the danger is over, which is why symptoms show up as hypervigilance, flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance and emotional numbness rather than simply as sad recollection.

Therapy works on the memory network directly, using structured approaches that let you process what happened without being flooded by it, and it works on the coping skills you need in the meantime. Most people come in expecting to have to narrate the worst thing that ever happened to them in detail. Several of the methods we use do not require that.

Only an assessment with a licensed clinician can tell you that, and there are patterns worth paying attention to. Common signs include:

Trauma symptoms can also arrive months or years after the event, and they do not require a single dramatic incident. Ongoing situations, including childhood environments, can produce them. If several of these describe your last month, a consultation is a reasonable next step.

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks you cannot control
  • Nightmares or disrupted sleep
  • Avoiding places, people or conversations that remind you of the event
  • Feeling constantly on alert or easily startled
  • Emotional numbness or detachment from people you care about
  • Irritability or anger that seems out of proportion
  • Difficulty concentrating

Trauma symptoms can also arrive months or years after the event, and they do not require a single dramatic incident. Ongoing situations, including childhood environments, can produce them. If several of these describe your last month, a consultation is a reasonable next step.

We use several, matched to the person rather than applied uniformly.

  • EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess a traumatic memory so it loses its charge, and it does not require detailed verbal retelling.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) works on the beliefs trauma leaves behind, such as self-blame or a conviction that the world is uniformly unsafe.
  • Prolonged Exposure gradually reduces avoidance by approaching feared memories and situations in a controlled way.
  • Brainspotting uses eye position to access where trauma is held in the body.
  • Trauma-focused CBT combines cognitive work with structured processing.
  • Somatic approaches address the physical residue that talk alone does not reach.

Your clinician will explain which they are recommending and why before you begin.

Trauma therapy is designed specifically to avoid re-traumatization, and the pacing is under your control. Before any processing work begins, you and your therapist spend time building stability and coping skills, so you have somewhere to land before you go anywhere difficult.

Processing is done in small, contained pieces rather than by reliving an event start to finish. You can stop at any point, and telling your therapist that something is too much is treated as useful information, not as failure.

It is normal to feel tired or emotionally raw after a session. It is not normal to feel worse week over week, and if that happens, say so, because it means the approach or the pacing needs to change.

PTSD typically follows a single traumatic event or a defined set of events. Complex PTSD, sometimes written C-PTSD, is associated with prolonged, repeated trauma, often beginning in childhood or occurring in situations a person could not leave.

The core PTSD symptoms are present in both. Complex PTSD tends to add difficulties with emotional regulation, a persistently negative self-concept, and recurring problems in relationships.

The distinction matters for treatment, because complex trauma usually needs a longer stabilization phase and more attention to the relationship with the therapist itself before processing work begins. A consultation is the place to sort out which picture fits.

It depends on what happened, how long ago, and whether it was a single event or an ongoing situation. Single-incident trauma often responds relatively quickly, and EMDR research has reported meaningful improvement for some people within a handful of processing sessions.

Complex or long-standing trauma generally takes considerably longer, because stabilization comes first and the processing work is done in stages. Anyone who promises you a fixed number before meeting you is guessing. What we can do in a free consultation is give you a realistic picture of the range and what the first few weeks would look like.

Our office is in Phoenix at 6245 N 24th Parkway, near 24th Street and Camelback beside Biltmore Fashion Park, roughly 20 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale on Camelback Road. We have served the Scottsdale area since 2012. If the drive does not work, online sessions are available to any Arizona resident.

Yes. Online trauma therapy is available to any Arizona resident, and EMDR in particular is routinely and effectively delivered online.

For some people online is actually preferable for trauma work, because being in your own space makes it easier to feel safe. Others want the containment of leaving the house and going somewhere for it. Both are legitimate, and you can switch. Call (480) 999-7070 and we will talk through which is likely to suit you.

Biltmore Psychology & Counseling is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, we provide a receipt you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement, and many clients are reimbursed for a portion of each session.

Fees vary by clinician and by the type of session, so call (480) 999-7070 and we will give you the current rate before you book anything.
